he infographic below highlights key figures from the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 PNG Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 and why they matter to Papua New Guinea.
PNG earned 𝗞𝟰.𝟮𝟳 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 from the mining, oil and gas sector in 2024 through taxes, royalties and other payments made by extractive companies.
The report also shows how heavily PNG’s economy depends on the sector:
✅𝟴𝟴.𝟯𝟰% of export earnings come from extractive industries
✅𝟮𝟴.𝟯% contribution to national GDP
✅Over 𝗞𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 paid to landowners in royalties
✅More than 𝗞𝟮𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 distributed to Provincial Governments through development levies
So why is this important?
Because transparency helps citizens, communities and leaders ask informed questions:
𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴?
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱?
𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀?
PNG EITI data helps make this information public and accessible. It supports accountability and helps communities better understand the value of the country’s natural resources.
PNGRGC continues to support transparent and responsible resource governance for the benefit of present and future generations.
